Large White Cuttlefish

Cuttlefish bones are generally used for Cuttlefish Casting, a traditional technique that offers a quick and fairly accurate casting method.

It's method is simple and can produce interesting surface details that have been transferred from the naturally textured material. This natural, porous material is easy to use and can be easily moulded.

To use;

  • Either use two bones or two halves of one bone and sand to create flat sides.
  • A model is then pressed into one flat side together with three or four locating pins. The other bone (flat side down) is then pushed onto the model.
  • The two halves are separated and the model removed.
  • It is important to score vents to allow the air to escape between the model and the outside edge of the bone.
  • A funnelled hole is also cut, which allows the molten metal to be poured into the cavity, the two halves are then bound together with binging wire.
  • The molten metal is then poured into the hole and left to solidify.
  • The mould is separated and the casting removed and allowed to cool.
