Spinel scientifically is classified as a whole group of related minerals, the origin of the name is actually unknown, many people think it is to do with the Greeks meaning 'spark'. Spinel comes in many colours, ranging from black to red, orange, yellow to dark green. It is recognised as its own individual mineral discovered only 150 years ago, before then it was classed in the Ruby family. You can find these gemstones in Afghanistan, Brazil, Australia, Nepal, Tanzania, Madagascar, Nigeria, Tadzhikistan, Thailand and the United States.
